Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Owashi Bungo, 1859

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Owashi Bungo, one of the 47 ronin from the classic play "Kanadehon Chushingura." Ready for the night attack on Moronao's palace, he carries an enormous wooden mallet over his shoulder, grimacing as he looks to the side. His red stage makeup and bushy sideburns and hair give him a fierce appearance. He wears a black and white dogtooth bordered robe over a black kimono and suit of armor, his two swords at his side. A striking design. Includes cloth embossing on the white areas of the kimono.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Backed with paper. Vertical centerfold. Stitching holes at side, repaired. Slight soiling and rubbing. Please see photos for details.
