Iwai Kumesaburo III as Oboshi Rikiya, 1859

Comments - Handsome portrait of Iwai Kumesaburo III in the role of Oboshi Rikiya from the classic kabuki drama "Kanadehon Chushingura," based on the true story of the 47 ronin. The young son of the ronin's leader, Oboshi Yuranosuke, Rikiya grins as he looks to the side, gripping a spear against his shoulder and carrying a paper lantern in his other hand. His thick hair is pulled back into a ponytail, and he wears the ronin's trademark black and white dogtooth bordered robe over a kimono and suit of armor. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and soft shading in the dark night sky, and cloth embossing on the white areas of the kimono.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Backed with paper. Vertical centerfold. Stitching holes at side, repaired. Slight soiling and rubbing. Please see photos for details.
