A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

View of Sanjusangendo Temple - Terrific image of the annual archery contest at Sanjusangendo (Hall of the Thirty-three Bays) Temple in Kyoto, held each spring and attracting samurai from around the country. The current contestant shoots from the near end of the temple verandah at lower right, the judges seated under a tent to the left. The area is fenced off from pedestrians, some of whom watch the excitement while others stroll the grounds. The building is also known as the "Hall of the Thirty-three Bays." A fine example of Toyoharu's interest in Western perspective, wonderfully detailed.
