The Fifty-three Stations of the Folding Fan - Handsome image from a collaborative series depicting the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido created to commemorate the journey of the Shogun from Edo to Kyoto in 1863 to pay his respects to the Emperor. The Shogun's power was in decline at the time, and the procession had not been made for many years, so this was an important event. Several artists created designs for the series, including Yoshitoshi and Hiroshige II. The series features a title cartouche in the shape of a folding fan, and is commonly known as the "Fan Tokaido." Scenes depict the Shogun's procession along the road, crossing mountains and plains, making their way through villages with townspeople lining the streets, fording rivers, and taking ferries. This is the title page for this rarely seen series.
