Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play "The Snow Bound Barrier of Love." The evil Otomo Kuronushi is disguised as the barrier guard Sekibei while he plots to take over the country. While drunk one evening, he decides to chop down a cherry tree that he feels has mysterious supernatural powers. Just as he is about to strike it, the spirit of the cherry tree appears in the form of the beautiful courtesan Sumizome, and the two become engaged in battle. Here, Sekibei grips the handle of an ax, looking up in surprise at the blossoming cherry tree overhead. He wears a black robe with a subtle burnished scroll design, the edge trimmed in purple. His short hair sticks up atop his head, with longer locks falling over his shoulder, giving him a rather wild appearance. Nicely composed.
