Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Hatsugasumi Onna Saruhiki, 1854

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Hatsugasumi Onna Saruhiki," a tragic tale about the lovers Oshun and the Genji samurai Denbei. Denbei stands behind a shoji panel at right, frowning as he pushes up the sleeve of his kimono. Oshun kneels on the other side, a roll of tissues wrapped around a purse in her hand. She looks back over her shoulder with a somewhat sinister grin, throwing her other hand out at her side. She wears a pink and gray kimono with an intricate leafy vine pattern and stylized white butterflies, the fabric trailing onto the floor around her. Her black obi is loosely wrapped about her. From left, the actors are Bando Shuka I and Bando Takasaburo I. Nice expressive figures in a handsomely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 19 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two separate panels. A few small wormholes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
