Series; Stories of Good and Evil Women (Zen aku fujin den), 1881
Stories of Good and Evil Women - Interesting print from a rare 1881 series by Kunichika featuring portraits of good and evil women. These chuban format scenes depict beauties from different time periods and walks of life, from elegant courtesans and noblewomen to wives and mothers. Some are shown demonstrating loyalty and courage in scenes ranging from attacking an enemy to protecting family or taking pride in fulfilling a duty, while other women commit murder or return as ghosts to haunt the living. The series is not well documented, and we've only seen a handful of designs from it. The settings are nicely detailed and vibrantly colored. A rare and intriguing series.
