Series; Eight Views from Fine Tales of Warriors

Saijo Uesugi Kenshin Dancing before Ghosts, 1868 - Fantastic scene of the great general Saijo Uesugi Kenshin dancing before a ghostly audience at an encampment in the mountains. Dressed in voluminous hakama pants, Kenshin leans forward, gracefully extending a fan with one hand as looks to the side. He is flanked by two seated warriors dressed in fine armor, with a bonfire blazing at left. Floating in the air before him, musicians accompany him on flute and hand drum. A nobleman standing at left wears blue pants with the white crest of the Taira Clan, and he scowls angrily at the performance. Tent walls and purple drapery overhead features the intricate Kenshin mon or crest of two sparrows enclosed in a ring of bamboo. Dark mountains loom in the distance against a gray sky, with a faint tinge of purple along the horizon, adding to the rather ominous atmosphere. Wonderful detail in the expressive faces. A fascinating Yoshitoshi triptych.
