Original Eisen (1790 - 1848) Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauty with an Umbrella

Comments - Lovely image of a beauty strolling along the shore with an umbrella in hand, pausing to look up at the sky. She wears a blue and rust checked kimono over an under robe with bats on the collar, and geta clogs with fuzzy straps. At right, a cart rests next to a signpost, with a view of buildings along the shore and boats in the harbor. During the late 1820s, a blue pigment imported from Europe became available in Japan, leading to the development of aizuri-e, woodblocks printed entirely or primarily in blue. This print has a "kiwame" (approved) seal, which was in use from about 1804 to 1841. A charming and rare aizuri-e design.

Artist - Eisen (1790 - 1848)

Image Size - 15 1/4" x 10 1/8"

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Small tear at edge, a couple holes, repaired. Toning at edges, slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
