One Hundred Roles of Ichikawa Danjuro IX - In 1893, Kunichika was commissioned to create the series "One Hundred Roles of Ichikawa Danjuro IX," depicting the kabuki star in his most famous roles, including many from classic kabuki dramas. These deluxe prints feature a half-length portrait of Danjuro IX, usually against a solid ground or with gold clouds across the top of the page. The simple backgrounds focus all attention on the expressive figures and colorful costumes. A rectangular inset includes a poem or small image, while the peonies framing the title cartouche are associated with the actor. These lavish images were printed to the highest standards, using expensive techniques and materials such as burnishing, embossing, and mica. The series was finally completed in 1903. This outstanding series is considered one of Kunichika's greatest works, making the subjects wonderful additions to a kabuki collection or for a collector of Kunichika prints.

Special detail - Mica on the headdress, embossed cracked ice pattern on the light green background, cloth embossing on the white kimono collar and trim and the rectangular inset.
