Hannya Demon Oshi-e Padded Design - Fascinating image of a demon woman done in oshi-e, a raised padded decoration made by wrapping cotton batting around paper and covering it with fabric. The technique is commonly used to decorate hagoita or battledores to celebrate the New Year, but this is the first time we've seen a picture made from it. The figure is a hannya, a jealous woman who has been transformed into a demon by her rage, leering with bulging eyes. The padded figure is mounted to a pale green sheet of paper scattered with gold mica flecks, and the face and the outlines of the arms are painted. A great example of this traditional Japanese art form.
