Angry Samurai, 1853

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of two women smiling as they watch a samurai angrily jumping about in the courtyard, hopping on one foot and sticking his elbows out. He wears a red kimono patterned with fierce yellow dragons tucked into black pants decorated with large shoji chess pieces, the sleeves of his green outer robe pushed down to the waist. In the center, Taro's wife Asaka leans forward with a grin, seemingly unconcerned by the samurai hiding his face under her coat. A young beauty in an elegant kimono looks through the window at right. A lovely setting with orange maple leaves framing the night sky and fine detail in the interior of the home. The left panel features Nakamura Fukusuke I and the center panel shows Nakamura Tomijuro II. An entertaining subject.
