Traveling Samurai, 1853

Comments - Interesting scene of the samurai Sanshichiro Yoshitaka at the foot of a bridge, waiting next to a horse laden with boxes. The village headman Tokuemon kneels beside him, holding a rope tied to the horse, while a group of samurai dressed in matching robes crouches at right. The men look up at him expectantly, some frowning unhappily. The actors include Nakayama Ichizo I as Tokuemon and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Yoshitaka. An intriguing subject with expressive faces and an unusual setting.
