Original Kuniteru (1808 - 1876) Japanese Woodblock Print
Snow, 1853

Comments - Beautiful triptych depicting Prince Genji and several beauties in an elegant interior. In the center a woman holds up a young child, who reaches eagerly for a toy treasure boat being carried into the room by another woman. The nobleman stands at right, smiling as he watches the excited little girl, an attendant draping a heavy coat over his shoulders. A lacquer tray on the floor between two braziers is piled with toys, including a pinwheel, a top, and a fish mounted on a wheeled cart as a pull toy. The verandah overlooks a snow-covered garden, with a stone bridge over a pond leading to another part of the palace complex. Wonderful detail in this terrific subject. A charming image.
