Scene from Senryo Nobori

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Sekitori Senryo Nobori" or "The Rise of the 1000 Ryo Wrestler." In the tale, the sumo wrestler Inagawa faces a dilemma because he needs money to finish ransoming a courtesan from a teahouse for his supporter. If he is unable to raise the funds, he will lose his honor and embarrass his patron. His rival Tetsugadake suggests that if Inagawa purposely loses the match to him, he will give him the needed funds. Here, two groups of men are gathered around low tables, each with a songbook on it, singing as they are accompanied by beauties playing shamisen. They seem a rather raucous group, looking more as if they are shouting than singing. In the center, a waitress holds out a cup of sake on a small tray, a pipe case and tobacco set are scattered on the floor. An intriguing image with expressive figures.
