A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Enjoying the Cool of the Evening by the Shijo Bridge - Attractive triptych depicting beauties enjoying the cool of the evening along the river by the Shijo Bridge. The river location in the summertime was a lovely place to escape the heat. In the center a woman holds a red lacquer sake cup while at right, another beauty leans over the edge of the platform to launch a floating firework. A wonderful view of this traditional activity, detailed with delicate embossing in the gently undulating water. Rarely seen complete in reprint.

Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.
