Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from one of several plays involving the efforts of the brothers Abe no Sadato and Abe no Muneto to avenge the death of their father. Muneto stands at right, holding a short sword over the garden gate as his brother's wife, Sodehagi, a blind shamisen player, kneels outside in the snow. Her young daughter Okimi stands behind her, throwing her sleeve up with an alarmed expression. Muneto grimaces angrily as he stands barefooted, lifting the edge of his plaid kimono with his other hand. Snow falls heavily through the wintry gray sky, blanketing the top of the brushwood fence at left. An intriguing subject with a nicely detailed setting.
