Fantastic original Hokusai from a wonderful early
Ships at Sea - Handsome reprint from a wonderful early Tokaido Road series designed by Hokusai around 1806. Most images focus on the figure rather than the landscape, showing travelers up close as they journey along the Tokaido or pause for a break along the roadside. Beautifully colored and detailed, these lively scenes offer an intriguing view of the sights and experiences encountered along this famed route, bordered with delicately striped pink clouds. A very unusual subject to find in reprint, these woodblocks are a great choice to collect or display.
Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.
