Tsuchiya Koitsu - After moving to Tokyo at age fifteen, Koitsu studied for many years with the woodblock artist Kobayashi Kiyochika. Known for his beautiful landscape prints with a dramatic use of light and shade, Koitsu was one of the leaders of the shin-hanga or new print movement in 20th century Japan.

Comments - Striking view of the large red paper lantern at Deva Gate (Nio Mon) at Asakusa Kannon temple. The building houses a figure of Nio, the Deva King guardian, which gives the gate its name. A woman walking through the gate provides a sense of scale for the tall pillars and enormous lantern. A few birds flutter about the sky and perch on the tile roof framed by a leafy tree at right. Nicely detailed and shaded.
