Rescuing a Beauty, 1865

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a samurai attempting to rescue an imprisoned beauty. He emerges from the foliage at left, a key attached to piece of wood dangling from his mouth. He looks furtively at the woman, who smiles gratefully as she presses one hand up against the wire grid covering the window of her cell. A rope is tied around her shoulders. At right, a commoner watches him with a tightlipped frown, his short hair sticking up atop his head with the rest pulled into a knot at the back. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kuzo III, Sawamura Tanosuke III, and Nakamura Shikan IV. A handsome design with wonderful detail in the setting. Includes burnishing on the black collar at right.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 28 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. Slight paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. A couple tears, a few holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few stains. Please see photos for details.
