Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Princess Toki, Miuranosuke, and Sasaki Tozaburo, 1865

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych featuring from left, Sawamura Tanosuke III as Princess Toki, Otani Tomoemon V as the young samurai Miuranosuke, and Nakamura Shikan IV as Sasaki Tozaburo. Tozaburo has come to collect Princess Toki and return her to her father, Hojo Tokimasa. The beauty refuses to come with him, though, preferring to remain at the house of her fiance, Miuranosuke, who stands between them. Tozaburo grimaces angrily, gripping a pole arm against his shoulder with both hands. Miuranosuke stares back at him with a slightly worried expression, a bow in hand. The princess watches her sweetheart carefully, holding out one hand before her, the other hand beneath the sleeve of her floral kimono. The large colorful figures are nicely set off by the night sky. A handsome design with fine line work in the hair and nice detail in the armor.
