Cooling Off at Shijo Riverside Resort in Kyoto

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Comments - Terrific panoramic view of the riverside at Shijo in Kyoto, with platforms on stilts over the water for visitors to relax and enjoy the cool evening breeze. Rows of shops run the length of the area in the center, which bustles with pedestrians. The moonlight casts shadows of the people and dogs in the foreground, a technique used in Western art, along with the perspective of the buildings receding into the distance. Wonderful detail in this charming design.

Artist - Toyoharu (1735 - 1814)

Image Size - 10" x 15 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - Excellent overall with no issues to report.
