Celebrating a Prosperous New Year: Nakamura Fukusuke I, Kataoka Nizaemon VIII, and Iwai Kumesaburo III, 1859

Comments - Attractive scene of three kabuki actors celebrating the New Year with an evening stroll. From right, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke I (R), Kataoka Nizaemon VIII (C), and Iwai Kumesaburo III. At right, Fukusuke plays a sumo wrestler wearing a blue coat over an intricately pattern kimono. He grimaces strangely as he looks at Nizaemon, who stares back at him with a slight frown, a pipe in his outstretched hand. Kumesaburo smiles happily as she leans forward, holding her sleeve to her chin. An ancient plum tree covered with blossoms and buds fills the background. The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has this image in its collection. A beautiful setting with soft shading in the night sky.
