Comments - Fantastic scene depicting the retainers of Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko) at the mountain lair of the terrible demon, Shuten-doji. Disguised as traveling monks, Raiko and his men traveled to the monster's hideout on Mt. Oe to rescue the young beauties he had kidnapped. They are shown here enjoying a banquet, plying Shuten-doji with sake to put him into a drunken stupor. The samurai at lower right pours sake from a large container into a kettle for warming, grimacing as he looks back over his shoulder. At lower left, Raiko performs a dance, striking a pose with a fan in one hand and his sleeve stretched out with the other. Behind him, red, blue, and green horned demons surround a seated beauty. At upper right, the verandah overlooks the rugged mountain landscape. A nicely detailed image from this famous tale.
