Comments - Handsome portrait from the story of the Taira warrior Akushichiboe Kagekiyo, who attempted to assassinate his enemy Minamoto no Yoritomo while Yoritomo was visiting Todai-ji Temple in preparation for the reconstruction of the Great Buddha there. Here, the Minamoto retainer Hanzawa Rokuro readies a length of rope to capture the attacker, stretching the cord between his hands as he clenches an iron truncheon between his teeth. He wears armor over a suit of mail, the fringe trimming the lower panels of armor swinging around him. In the temple above, Yoritomo's trusted general Hatakeyama Shigetada gestures with his fan. A blossoming cherry tree frames the view with petals falling to the ground below. An expressive figure, nicely detailed.
