Attacking a Beauty, 1881

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene showing a man ready to attack a beauty, holding a knife high above his head as he glares at her. She coyly smiles back at him, waving her hand as if to dismiss any possible threat. The samurai standing beside her scowls at her potential attacker, holding his sword upright. Outside the garden gate at left, a commoner in a striped blue kimono waits in the cold as snow falls in large flakes against the dark blue sky. An intriguing subject with expressive faces and lively color. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kodanji, Ichikawa Sadanji, Iwai Hanshiro, and Onoe Kikugoro. Includes burnishing on the black kimono.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)
