The 47 Ronin, Act 3: The Rear Gate, 1866

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from Act 3 of the classic drama about the 47 ronin, "The Loyal Retainers" (Chushingura). Here Sagisaka Bannai, one of Lord Moronao's retainers, attacks the ronin Hayano Kampei and his sweetheart as they leave the palace to elope. He stands with his feet spread firmly apart, gripping his cased sword in his hand as he leans forward with an angry frown, his other hand thrown out at his side. His brown basketweave patterned pants are tucked up at the back for easier movement, and he has a white sash tied around his forehead. An expressive figure.
