A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Munekata's Calendar Prints - A terrific design from a series of calendar prints by the modern master Shiko Munakata, commissioned by Yaskawa Electric Corporation beginning in 1958. Munakata designed a new series of twelve prints each year which were reproduced as lithographs and sent to the company's customers throughout Japan and abroad. The calendars proved so popular that Yaskawa continued to publish his designs yearly after his death.

These lively images are characterized by energetic line work, with bold black outlines against the paper or contrasting with softer tones or bright colors. The designs were printed on a fine, thin hand-made Japanese paper. Publishing information in Japanese and date is stamped on the reverse of each image.

Original Munakata prints are very rare and extremely expensive in the market, usually selling in the $20,000 - $100,000 range. The calendar prints are a nice opportunity to collect a classic Munakata design at an attractive price point.
