Original Miran Fukuda (born 1963) Japanese Woodblock Print
Snow, Moon and Flowers, 2012

Comments - Contemporary artist Miran Fukuda creates designs inspired by modern media as well as classic ukiyo-e subjects by artists such as Hiroshige and Yoshitoshi. Here, she uses the format of Hiroshige's "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" to showcase imagery from the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Two hands stretch a ribbon from a medal across the scene, creating a drapery effect dividing the image in two. Above, an Olympic ring stands in for a glowing full moon against a cloudy sky. Below, a red verandah railing frames a view of snow-covered pines with a temple in the distance. The hand at right holds a bunch of flowers. The theme of "Snow, Moon and Flowers" was popular with Edo era woodblock prints artists. The artist also uses the same title and signature blocks as Hiroshige's from "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," along with the original series censor and date seals in the margin. A fantastic contemporary design combining historic and modern subjects, published by the Adachi Foundation for the Preservation of Woodblock Printing. This subject was included in the "Ukiyo-e Pop: Pop Culture from Edo to Today" exhibit at the Shizuoka Tokaido Hiroshige Museum in 2013. A great choice for a collector interested in contemporary Japanese art.
