Beauty Holding a Pocket Mirror, 1914

Series; Kyogen at the Imperial Theater, 1914

Kyogen at Tokyo Theaters - Handsome design from a terrific group of small kabuki portraits by Yoshida Unosuke, published by Eitaro Yoshida of Tokyo in Taisho 3 (1914). The prints were issued in at least three series, each for a specific Tokyo theater, the with first group devoted to the Imperial Theater, the second to the Kabuki Theater, and the third to the Ichimura Theater. These bold images feature detailed, half-length portraits of kabuki actors, with expressive faces capturing a range of emotions, and vibrant color. The first time we've seen this early shin-hanga series. A nice choice for a kabuki collector.
