Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the Soga Brothers attacking their father's murderer, Suketsune, at the Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. As the title indicates, the brothers were finally able to achieve their goal of avenging their father's death in this dramatic surprise attack. In the center Soga Goro, wearing his trademark butterfly robe, lunges forward as he thrusts his sword into an enemy, who falls backwards. At right Soga Juro, dressed in bird patterned kamishimo, swings his sword, sending two adversaries tumbling to the ground. The battle rages all around them under a falling rain, with the Shogun watching angrily from his pavilion at left, surrounded by his retainers. A terrific illustration of this climactic battle, with wonderful detail in the expressive figures and an atmospheric night setting at the base of the great mountain.
