Kabuki Actors on a Curtain

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych featuring shaped insets with portraits of actors set against a curtain with writing on it. At lower left, Nakamura Shikan appears as Masuda Hachiemon, playing a koto and looking up with an evil grin. At top center, a beauty looks down with a shy smile, her hands clasped before her while below, a matron takes a hairpin from her hair. At upper right, a man stares ahead with a worried expression while his companion looks slyly over his shoulder, a camellia blossom in his hand. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan, Iwai Shijaku, bottom Bando Mitsugoro, Bando Shinzaemon, and Onoe Kikugoro. Nice expressive faces in an unusual format. An interesting design.
