Five Chivalrous Men, 1870

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych depicting the five chivalrous commoners, otokodate or "street knights" who protected local people from outlaw samurai. The men wear an array of impressive kimono with striking designs, including a dragon, oversize chrysanthemums, and blue irises. Each has a towel casually draped over his shoulder, and each carries a large umbrella painted with characters. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji as Nango Rikimaru, Sawamura Tossho as Tadanobu Rihei, Nakamura Shikan as Nippon Daemon, Onoe Kikugoro as Benten Kozo, and Iwai Shijaku as Akaboshi Juza. A dramatic composition with large figures.
