Shinobu no Sota Preparing to Draw a Sword, 1863

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a confrontation taking place along an embankment. At left, Shinobu no Sota, a former retainer of the Yoshida family who has become a gardener, frowns worriedly as he prepares to draw his sword. In the center, Tengu Kozo Kirotaro, who is actually the missing samurai Yoshida Matsuwaka, grins as he looks over his shoulder at Sota, his weapon in hand. At right, a commoner stands outside a courtyard fence, a tight-lipped frown on his face as he tucks up the back of his kimono. Pine and willow branches frame the sky above the gently rippling water. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Ichizo, Iwai Kumesaburo, and Nakamura Shikan. A handsome design.
