Scene from Kaga Sodo, 1874

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait from a play based on the Kaga Sodo, a family feud in 1748 among members of the Maeda clan in the Kaga Domain. The seated matron looks up at her companion with a suspicious frown, watching her out of the corners of her eyes as she holds a pipe The beauty behind her smiles happily, seemingly unaware of the matron's expression, her hands resting atop the older woman's shoulders. A kimono shaded from bleu to light green with a bold pattern of huge chrysanthemums and a kanji character hangs on an elegant black lacquer stand behind the women. Nice expressive figures set off by the deep red background.
