Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Katakiuchi Gojingahara, 1899

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Katakiuchi Gojingahara" (Vengeance at Gojingahara) of four men in the countryside on a moonlight night, with two circular insets featuring portraits of beauties. The men exchange angry frowns as they look at each other, each holding a sword. The two seated fellows have rather disheveled hair, with loose hairs framing their faces. Willow branches frame a view of the night sky with a glowing crescent moon. From left, the actors are Bando Shucho as Kumagai's wife Omise (inset), Onoe Matsusuke as Wakasaya Sangoro, Ichikawa Yaozo as Kumagai Denjuro, Onoe Kikugoro as Honjo, Ichikawa Somegoro as Kumagai Dennojo, and Nakamura Fukusuke as Honjo's wife (inset). An Interesting design with an attractive setting.
