Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from a play performed at the short-lived Sawamuraza or Sawamura Theater. In 1873, the actor Sawamura Tanosuke III received a license to present kabuki plays at the Satsumaza or Satsuma Theater. The theater was renamed after the actor in 1874, but was forced to close that same year after the failure of the play "Kandehon Chushingura." Here, a beauty grins happily as she looks up over her shoulder, cradling a baby to her chest. Her hair is arranged in a single loop with a wooden ornament, and her blackened teeth indicate her married status. The background is divided diagonally with a pine tree over the water above and a red tie-dyed textile pattern below. A colorful design with a large expressive figure.
