Ichimura Uzaemon as Shirai Gonpachi, 1862

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Ichimura Uzaemon as the young Shirai Gonpachi, who is wanted for murdering a man in his home town. Here, he flings his hand up above his head as a burning candle in a lantern base is thrust at him. He frowns unhappily, his brows slightly furrowed. He wears a green kimono over a red under robe, his hair pulled back into a topknot, with a few loose hairs faming his face giving him a disheveled appearance. A large expressive figure, detailed with fine line work in the hair and soft shading in the night sky.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Dried glue on reverse from previous mounting. Slight separation at ends of horizontal centerfold, a few small holes, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, stain. Please see photos for details.
