Beauty with an Umbrella

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Comments - Charming portrait of a beauty holding an umbrella, the edge of her scarf caught between her teeth as she looks back over her shoulder. She wears an intricately patterned blue and gray kimono over a red under robe with a gray print collar. Her hair is pulled back into a smooth bun adorned with several hairpins. The inset at upper left shows two small dogs in a snowy landscape. A lovely design with fine detail in the hair.
