The Eighteen Kabuki Plays: The Subscription List, 1899

Comments - Terrific scene from the "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho), one of the "Eighteen Kabuki Plays" made famous by the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors. In the drama Yoshitsune and his men, including his loyal retainer Benkei, have disguised themselves as yamabushi or mountain monks to sneak across the border. The aristocrat Togashi, shown here in a blue kimono patterned with cranes, is charged with intercepting the party. They tell him they are collecting funds for temple restoration, so Togashi asks Benkei to read a list of the contributors. Thinking quickly, he reads a fake subscription list from a scroll. Here, Benkei scowls angrily as he holds the scroll out between his hands while Togashi watches him suspiciously. At left, The young Yoshitsune waits meekly, holding a walking staff and wearing a lacquer hat. A pine tree in soft gray silhouette against a golden yellow background suggests the outdoor setting. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Onoe Kikugoro. A bold design with large expressive figures, beautifully detailed with burnishing on Benkei's black robe and Togashi's black court cap.
