Scene from Ayatsuri Sanbaso, 1899

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the dance "Ayatsuri Sanbaso." In the center, Onoe Kikugoro appears as the ceremonial dancer Sanbaso, striking a pose with his sleeve flung back behind his head. He wears a lavender vest with a crane in flight over the shoulders and pine, plum, and bamboo, the "Three Friends of Winter," and a striped cap. A nobleman watches at left, holding a black lacquer box tied with a red cord. At right, a beauty looks on with a slight smile, wearing a blue robe with crane crests on the shoulders and sleeves and a black court cap. Her hair is adorned with ribbons and clusters of flowers. Blossoming plum branches frame the sky above. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke, Onoe Kikugoro, and Onoe Eizaburo. A handsome design nicely detailed with burnishing on the nobleman's and beauty's black caps
