Fighting in a Bamboo Grove, 1888

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of two samurai fighting in a bamboo grove. The warrior astride a brown horse raises his riding crop high above his head, ready to bring it down on his enemy. He wears a red vest over a fine suit of armor, and a horned helmet. His attacker thrusts a spear at him from among the bamboo stalks, his hair falling loosely over his shoulders. At upper right, a castle can be seen in silhouette against the evening sky. A dramatic scene with large expressive figures and an atmospheric setting. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji and Ichikawa Danjuro. Nicely detailed, with fine bokashi shading and handsome wood grain impression in the background.
