Scene from Kochiyama to Naozamurai, 1881

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Kochiyama to Naozamurai." At right, the gang leader Kochiyama is disguised as a priest, wearing a red robe and a purpled cloth headdress, a string of prayer beads in his hand. At top center, Matsue's wife smiles sweetly while she looks over her shoulder, one hand tucked beneath the collar of her kimono. At lower left, a seated samurai glares up at her with an enraged expression. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro, Iwai Hanshiro, and Ichikawa Danjuro. A colorful design with expressive figures.
