Six Poetry Immortals Ink Battle, 1879

Comments - Entertaining scene of the Six Poetry Immortals and several young monks in an ink battle, painting each other with black ink. The daimyo at center daubs his brush on the cheek of a young boy, who turns away, grabbing his wrist as he extends his own brush across the room. The victims grimace and struggle, hands outstretched in alarm or trying to push away the offending culprit. The beauty Ono no Komachi watches wide-eyed, perhaps surprised at their lack of decorum, using her kimono sleeve as a shield. An amusing and colorful image, nicely detailed with a burnished pattern on the nobleman's black robe at right and burnishing on the court cap in the center.
