Argument outside a Tea Stall, 1883

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of an argument taking place outside a tea stall. The fellow in the center brandishes a sword as he glares at the seated man at right, who stares back at him with a slight frown. The man at left throws his hand out in an agitated manner as he tucks up the back of his kimono. A blossoming cherry tree frames a view of the buildings in the distance against a dramatic red sky. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji, Nakamura Fukusuke, and Ichikawa Danjuro. The first time we've seen this Chikanobu design.
