Comments - Handsome scene from the play "Momijigari" at the Kabukiza or Kabuki Theater in Tokyo. The warrior Taira no Koremochi is on an outing to view the maple trees on Mt. Togakushi. The Princess Sarashina appears, offering sake to Koremochi and performing a dance for him. He falls asleep and has a dream in which the god of the mountain warns him that the princess is actually a demon, and awaking, he battles her. Here, the beauty tosses a folding fan in the air with an unhappy frown, holding her other hand out towards the Koremochi. He looks up with an angry frown, a cup of sake in one hand as he leans against an armrest. He wears a light brown tunic patterned with blossoms and scrolls, and a tall black court cap. At lower right, a tray holds sweets. Maple leaves frame the scene above. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro and Onoe Kikugoro. Nice large figures, detailed with burnishing on the black cap and armrest, and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the fan.
