Comments - Interesting scene of a confrontation taking place at the water's edge. At right, a beauty strikes a pilgrim over the shoulder with a wooden oar. Nikoma Shintaro has fallen onto the ground, tumbling back on one knee as he grabs at the oar. He wears a traditional pilgrim's white vest and has a string of votive slips on a cord around his neck. At left, Ude no Sakichi holds an object wrapped in cloth high above his head, staring at it with an angry frown. The beauty smiles slyly as she also looks up at the object. A boat with a large basket in it is moored along the shore, with a pine branch framing the night sky above and a few reeds growing at the edge of the gently undulating water. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kodanji, Ichikawa Yonejuro, and Onoe Kikujiro. Nice expressive figures in a handsome setting, with soft shading on the background.
