Two Leaves of Brocade for Genji at His Peak, 1856

Comments - Terrific scene of Prince Genji in a teahouse in the early morning. He sits on a bed at left, smiling as a young girl brings him a basin of water and a toothbrush. A courtesan kneels before him, holding a slender pipe. In the center, a beauty pokes at the glowing coals in a brazier, while an attendant approaches with a teapot and a shovel to scoop the ashes. The remnants of last night's meal rest on a low lacquer table at right, while outside on the verandah, a beauty helps a guest on with his coat as he prepares to leave. Wonderful detail in the architectural setting and the furnishings. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A handsome design.
