Series: Personalities of Recent Times

Muraoka of the Konoe Clan Bound with Rope, 1887 - Dramatic print depicting Lady Muraoka of the Konoe Clan. A staunch loyalist, she disagreed with the shogunate's new open-door policy, and was arrested in 1858 during the Ansei Purge. Although she was tortured, her loyalty won her much approval once the shogunate fell. Yoshitoshi depicts her wearing the elegant robes of the much earlier Heian Period, and the traditional "moth eyebrows" favored during that time. Her head falls to one side, a strand of hair in her mouth, the rope tightly bound around her torso and neck. Her kimono is beautifully decorated with flowering vines, the white petals and kimono collar delicately embossed. A handsomely detailed image from this fascinating series done for the Yamato Shimbun newspaper.
