Courtesans at the House of the Golden Vase, 1860

Comments - Terrific scene depicting the Kinpeiro or House of the Golden Vase in the Yoshiwara. High-ranking courtesans are just leaving to parade through the streets. Attendants and kamuro or child apprentices accompany them, each elegantly dressed in colorful kimono and obi. Other women watch from the balcony above, with a very young girl leaning over the balustrade at left. Lanterns adorned with beaded tassels hang from the eaves, and cherry trees blossom in the courtyard below. Wonderful detail in the architectural setting and fine kimono fabrics, including light embossing in the white kimono trim. A lovely design.

Artist - Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)

Image Size - 14" x 18 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels, backed with paper. Large loss at edge, a few smaller losses and pinholes at edges, small loss on one face, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
